In particular it can be linked to the intergenerational impact of racism, where the traumatic impact of racism can be unconsciously passed on via family relationships. This type of emotional struggle can appear as a defence against trusting others to really support and hold an individual. It can also signify lack of intimate connection to others due to past hurts from oppressions such as racism. Symptoms of compulsive independence manifest in drivers and a need to help others, but not asking for help and support.
